The inspiration for San Francisco's Cable Cars came from watching horse drawn carriages slide backwards on the steep cobblestone boulevards that line this beautiful city during the Gold Rush. During these wild-cat days, a new patent for wire-rope was being used on suspension bridges along the Sacramento River as well as pulling heavy ore cars out of gold mines on railroad tracks. The same technology was used for pulling cable cars up the arduous inclines of San Francisco.
Public service began in 1873 and thousands enjoy the "San Francisco Treat" of hopping on the same Cable Cars nearly 150 years later.
